The Insurance Man: Kafka in The Penal Colony
From now until June 27th, visit the SFU Gallery (Burnaby campus) to experience this thought-provoking exhibit based on the written works of Franz Kafka.
Three years in the making, this theatrical installation probes Kafka’s references in his story In The Penal Colony, in which a researcher/explorer arrives at a South Seas penal colony and is blithely introduced to a strange apparatus designed for capital punishment. Anticipating the torture machinery of both the mid- and late 20th century, the story is a cautionary tale for our times.
This exhibit reflects the combination of high seriousness and comic hyper-reality that make Franz Kafka’s reality ours as well; his/our world is both surreal and subreal. His punishment instrument has been metaphorically recreated at SFU in a room filled with Kafka-era portraits, books, objects, sounds and texts – blending the real with the uncanny, and the archival with the contemporary.
This is the first-ever Kafka exhibition in Vancouver, and was conceived by Jerry Zaslove and co-curated by Bill Jeffries and Jerry Zaslove. This installation is accompanied by an insightful brochure that explores the history and implications of Kafka’s colony.
The SFU Gallery also presents four evenings of Kafka films from June 22 to 25 at the Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street), featuring an introductory talk by Jerry Zaslove on June 22 at 6:30pm. Visit www.vifc.org for details.
