The Intertidal Zone: Prints by Doug Guildford Opens at the Burnaby Art Gallery

Intertidal Zones at the Burnaby Art GalleryThe Burnaby Art Gallery is pleased to present The Intertidal Zone: Prints by Doug Guildford from now through November 21st.

Doug Guildford’s visual arts practice has evolved considerably over the years; however, his interest in exploring the physical world around him has remained constant. Originally trained as a graphic artist, Guildford has maintained a public practice rooted in drawing and traditional printmaking.

Guildford spends his time between two studios – one in Toronto, and another on the Atlantic coast of the south shore of Nova Scotia.  The Intertidal Zone focuses on the experiences and interactions with the North Atlantic coast, and comprises etchings and serigraphs executed by Guildford over the past decade.  What is an intertidal space or zone?  The Amy H Remley (water conservation) Foundation defines it as: of or denoting the area of a seashore that is covered at high tide and uncovered at low tide.  How can this space relate to printmaking?  Take into consideration layering and the tides… revealing and erasing.

Doug Guildford’s exhibition is presented in association with Culture Days — a national weekend that celebrates the arts, artists and creative cultural activities.

Gallery programming for The Intertidal Zone: Prints by Doug Guildford includes:

Culture Days Event: Crochet Social with artist Doug Guildford on Friday, September 24th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.  As well as referencing crochet in his prints, Doug Guildford has embraced the technique of crochet in his 3-D work.  Join the Burnaby Art Gallery for an informal evening of learning crochet, work with unusual and traditional materials, and meet other artists and textile junkies alike (19+ event, bar by donation).

A reception and artist talk will be held on Saturday, September 25th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

Additional gallery events: In the B.A.G. - Free Family Sunday Programs
