Burnaby Art Gallery Presents George Fertig

From June 1st to July 11th, the Burnaby Art Gallery (BAG) presents the rarely-seen works of artist George Fertig.

Geroge Fertig at the Burnaby Art GalleryProfoundly influenced by the world of art – specifically Gaugin and Chardin, as well as the writings of Carl Jung – Fertig was often known as an artist’s artist.  His unique oil paintings are esteemed by those who delight in the inner realities of life.

Born in Alberta in 1915, Fertig’s creative passion began at the age of 20.  In the 1950s and ‘60s, he was often referred to as the “Moon Man” due to his illustrations of large and powerful archetypal images in his paintings.  His later oils were small, mystical still lives that offered meditations on eternity, unity and light.

Fertig worked and produced extensively during his lifetime, and his paintings are almost exclusively found in select private collections.  This rare exhibition chronicles Fertig’s career from his early days as an artist.   Fertig lived in Vancouver and Burnaby from 1941-1983.

The Things We Do Showcased at SFU Gallery

From now until June 30th, the SFU Gallery presents this thought-provoking exhibit featuring the works of Helen Eady, Cindy Loehr, Karen Ostrom, Marcia Pitch and Elizabeth Zvonar.

SFU Art Gallery, The Things we doIn an age rife with metaphysical confusion, The Things We Do is a five-person show that settles many of the major questions that have been plaguing humanity as of late. Talking and gesturing hands, erotic arms, mongrel figures and arguing animals are all on view in an effort to guide us through the errors of our collective ways.

Learning from limbs and animals is not just an alternative communication reality weaving its way through these works, it’s what it is all about. In Vancouver’s post-Olympic triumphal moment, this exhibition is a modest, understated guide to the future evolutionary arc of the species.
Helen Eady, Marcia Pitch and Elizabeth Zvonar are based in Vancouver; Cindy Loehr and Karen Ostrom in New York.

Lunchtime talks on this exhibition will be held at 12:05pm and 12:35pm on
June 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
