Symphony, Soul & More at Deer Lake Park

From the famed Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival to classical music, arts activities and more – Deer Lake Park hosts a number of popular events throughout the summer.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra AudienceOn Sunday, July 11, enjoy the sights and sounds of the 22nd Annual Symphony in the Park.  From 7:30pm to 9:30pm, the esteemed Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will perform a delightful program of light classics and popular favorites.  Come early, bring a blanket and a picnic basket, and settle in for an enchanted evening of music amid the stunning backdrop of Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park.  Free admission.

Re-discover Burnaby at the 26th Annual Discovery Day Festival on Sunday, July 18th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  As the city’s largest community grass roots event, this celebration offers fun and creativity for the whole family with a variety of music, live theatre, street performances and interactive visual arts activities.  Free admission.

The annual Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival takes place in Burnaby’s picturesque Deer Lake Park once again on Saturday, August 14th from 2:00pm to 10:00pm.  (Gates open at 1:00pm.)  As Metro Vancouver’s premier blues and roots music event, the annual Blues + Roots festival features renowned musicians from across North America and around the world. 

Among others, some of the headlining artists at this year’s festival include Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Serena Ryder, Colin Linden and Little Miss Higgins.  The Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival is also a family-friendly event with a variety of children’s activities, including “Art’s Home” - a kid’s arts activity zone.  Tickets to the festival are on sale now.  Visit Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival for more information.

Featuring the best in independent films to family-friendly magicians and award-winning performances, the Shadbolt Centre has something for everyone. Here are a few of the upcoming events and performances at the Shadbolt Centre:

June 2-5, The Greatest Cities in the World – Built entirely of words, video and images gathered during travels to the cities of Rome, Paris, Moscow, London and Athens, Tennessee, The Greatest Cities in the World depicts how a collection of strangers –culturally, historically and linguistically – come together to build the greatest city in the world.  The Greatest Cities in the World is the 2010 winner of the distinguished Rio-Tinto Alcan Award for Theatre.

June 6, Magic for Youngsters! – This incredible show boasts magicians and clowns and jugglers… oh my!   The Shadbolt Centre once again welcomes the 50th Annual Children's Magician of the Year, presented by The Vancouver Magic Circle in Association with The International Brotherhood of Magicians.  As part of this exciting show, you’ll witness amazing antics, mystifying miracles and much more!  SIX of the top Children's Entertainers in BC will be vying for the top award – and YOU get to decide who wins! So bring the whole family for some clean, wholesome afternoon fun – and see for yourself if Vancouver's Got Talent! 

June 20, Opera on a Sunday Afternoon - Enjoy the magical sounds of the Burnaby Lyric Opera as they present highlights from the upcoming 2010/2011 season.

June 21, Black Box Film Series presents Bright Star – This acclaimed film is a telling portrait of love and loss by the romantic poet John Keats, who composed the love poem “Bright Star” for his18-year-old next door neighbour, Fanny Brawne.  Bright Star is the story of their first love.  The Shadbolt Centre’s Black Box Film Series showcases the best in independent Canadian and international films, and is coordinated in partnership with Film Circuit and The Toronto International Film Festival Group.
