Burnaby Offers a Taste of Europe

Explore the many sights, sounds and tastes of Europe at the 13th Annual European Festival on Saturday, May 29th.

With some 15 hours of fun for the whole family, the European Festival is a day-long celebration of everything European.  Swirling flags and colourful multicultural costumes will highlight the Opening Ceremony parade, followed by an entertaining array of dance and musical performances throughout the day.

European Festival, Scandinavian Centre BurnabyThe festival is especially renowned for its delicious culinary offerings from across Europe.  Treat your taste buds by sampling authentic and tantalizing recipes in the Food Tent.  For adults, the Beer Garden is the perfect spot to relax with a brew while enjoying the engaging stage performances.  Then, top off the evening by dancing up a storm to the rockin’ tunes of a live band inside the Scandinavian Centre.

As a kid-friendly event, youngsters will especially delight in the arts and crafts and face-painting in the Children's Tent.  Kids will also love doing acrobatics in the Bouncy Castle, climbing up the Swiss Rock Wall, and collecting country stamps for their Festival Passports.

The festival will feature some 32 cultural display booths representing Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Metis Nation, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

Hats Off at the Heights

Visit Burnaby Heights on Saturday, June 5th from 9:00am to 3:00pm for their Hats Off Day party - featuring a “main-street” style parade with real local flavour.

Chinese Dragon at Hats Off DayHats Off Day takes place on the first Saturday of every June, during which Heights merchants “take their hats off” to their community and their customers in this one-day extravaganza – which also includes a big street party with treats, giveaways, draws, prizes and special promotions.

This year, the Hats Off Day parade starts at 9:00am and runs along Hastings Street from Beta Avenue to Ingleton Avenue.  The street festival officially kicks off at 11:00am with lots of music, food, kids’ activities and more on Hastings Street (from Boundary Road to Gamma Avenue).

Show and Shine, Hats off DayDue to popular demand, the Show & Shine classic and custom car show is back again as part of the Hats Off Day festivities.  The 2009 vehicle category winners will be showcased in the parade, while this year’s Show & Shine cars will be on display on Hastings Street between Willingdon and Gamma avenues.

As one of the city’s most popular events, Hats Off Day has been voted as “Burnaby’s Best Festival” by readers of the Burnaby Now newspaper for the past five years.
