Mom's the Word: Remixed
MG3 - Montreal Guitar Trio
Cultural Olympiad - The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan
January 27 & 28, Mom’s the Word: Remixed – They’re back! The shockingly funny Moms reunite to bring you highlights from the smash hits Mom’s the Word and
Mom’s the Word 2: Unhinged. In this premiere production, they’ll share their true, intimate tales of the heartache and joy of parenthood – from a bun in the oven to the terrible twos to the terrifying teens.
February 5, Roman Danylo Live – Roman Danylo is ‘Roman around the country’ in this variety comedy show consisting of sketch, stand-up and improv. The show is both light-hearted and edgy, taking on various subjects from love and war to snacks at the mall food court. Roman starts his show with high energy observational stand-up, then incorporates audience members into interactive comedy sketches, all the while peppering in some of his popular characters from TV. Roman breaks all the rules of a traditional comedy show by often crawling into the crowd or bringing audience members up on stage to make them part of the experience. Offering up all types of comedy, on a wide range of topics – this show has a little something for everyone.
February 12, MG3–Montreal Guitar Trio – MG3 leads its audience to a special place where jazz and world music are entwined with gusto. Spiced by a wry sense of humour, the music exudes an irresistible passion that will make you stomp furiously! The trio’s eclectic music takes listeners on a journey through the world’s many cultures – from the exotic melodies of India to the hot rhythms of South America and Spain, as well as the Balkans, the Orient, traditional Quebec and Hollywood. Over the last 10 years, MG3 has performed hundreds of concerts all over the world. MG3 recently made its debut in Denmark, New Zealand and Amsterdam’s prestigious Concertgebouw.
February 27, March 1, 3, 4 & 6, Cosi Fan Tutte (Women are Like That) – by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Don Alfonso (an old cynic) is determined to prove to his two young friends, Guglielmo and Ferrando, that their fiancées are not to be trusted; they are like all women. Alfonso lays his plot and tells the sisters that their lovers have been sent off to war; he then introduces them to two “Albanians,” who are Guglielmo and Ferrando in disguise. Will the women succumb to the advances of these “Albanians”? In a hilarious production from Burnaby Lyric Opera, Mozart meets Gossip Girl as the action plays out in a modern-day sorority house. Arias and quartets mix with Facebook and texting, as we discover that the ecstasy and folly of love is the same now as in 1790.
The ghost of Don Juan is summoned from hell to repend for his sins and to tell us the tale of his nefarious life so that we may avoid his fate. But does he truly repent? Is he a monster or a saint? He attempts to save us from our amorous errors and deliver a sermon of universal love. In the end, we are liberated from our fears and what we thought would be a simple evening at the theatre becomes a transcendental orgy that will change us forever.
