Spring Into the Burnaby Village Museum

From opening day celebrations and the Regional Heritage Fair to the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay and the annual Victoria Day party (and even a special Mother’s Day gift idea) – the Burnaby Village Museum offers excitement, fun, fanfare… and a colossal cake.  The museum officially opens its doors for the season on May 5th, just in time to get ready for the warmer weather and longer days.

Visit the museum on May 11th and 12th for the River to Sea Regional Heritage Fair, in which students from the Burnaby, New Westminster and Coquitlam school districts create and contribute their projects on Canadian history and heritage.  Since the annual Heritage Fairs Program began in 1993, it has grown to include projects from more than 200,000 students across Canada.   Projects will be on display on May 12th from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Help mark the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion World Tour (MIMWT) at the Burnaby Village Museum on May 18th.  Join Rick in his journey to find a cure and a more inclusive society as he inspires a new generation to make a difference – to dream, to take action and to continue changing the world for the better.

In every province, Relay Medal-Bearers will pass along the singular Rick Hansen Medal - produced by the Royal Canadian Mint - as the Relay makes its way across the country. While Rick will be present at a number of cities and stops along the 25th Anniversary Relay, it will be these 7,000 Medal-Bearers who will complete this cross-Canada tour.

Join the village in celebrating the important Man in Motion tour:
4:00pm to 5:00pm – entertainment and celebrations
5:00pm to 5:30pm – official ceremonies

On May 21st, there’s no better place or way to celebrate Victoria Day than at the Burnaby Village Museum.  From 11:00am to 4:30pm, the museum becomes party central with much pomp, ceremony and fun.  Set in the roaring ‘20s, the village is the perfect place to spend Victoria Day, after all it’s the place where pictures of King George V and Queen Mary are hung in the school house, where the Union Jack flies over the site… and Victoria Day is celebrated in grand style.

The museum will feature special entertainment all day long including: the Morris Dancers, Maypole Dancing, a parade, and construction of a colossal cake. And after the parade, well… there’ll be birthday cake for all (decorated with blueberries and strawberries in the shape of the Union Jack).
