Stay the night...
Need to get over the post-Olympic blues? From inspiring musical acts and engaging theatre to thought-provoking performances and more, the Shadbolt Centre has just the ticket. Here are just a few of the upcoming performances at the award-winning Shadbolt Centre for the Arts:
Kevin Fox
Ali and Ali 7
Seraphine
Goggles
Sal Ferreras

Dubbed “Canada’s most ubiquitous side-man,” Kevin Fox is a revered multi-instrumentalist, sought-after arranger/composer and recording artist. Awareness of Kevin’s talents as a singer and songwriter spread quickly with the release of his debut album Come Alive. Over time, this Halifax native has established a continually growing fan base. In 2008, Kevin released his second album, Songs for Cello and Voice, for which he earned much critical praise. In this second album, Kevin combines his signature instrument – which he skilfully bows, plucks, taps and loops – with his charismatic voice to create a unique and captivating musical tapestry of cello-driven folk/pop.

The Black Box Film Series presents a showing of Seraphine, in partnership with Film Circuit and The Toronto International Film Festival Group. The series will showcase the best in independent Canadian and international films.

Created by Camyar Chai, Guillermo Verdecchia and Marcus Youssef, these Ali and Ali creators turn their idiosyncratic brand of post-identity satire to the new world: The global economy has tanked, the president of the world’s middle name is Hussein and, in Canada, five Arab/Muslim men continue to be held without charges and access to the evidence against them. And there’s that crazy climate change thing, not to mention the soon to be subjugation of Western peoples at the hands of the Red Chinese. How do you cope with all that? Easy. Go see Ali and Ali. Hey, if it’s smart to bailout the companies that brought us the Hummer, then two refugees from the well-known Middle Eastern Country of Agraba (see Disney’s Aladdin) are just what the doctor ordered...

Crime. Drama. Murder. We watch the death of another again and again either as entertainment, media news fodder or as collective nightmare. What is it that attracts us so strongly to these ceaseless depictions of untimely demise and bloody crime? In Goggles, a mystery unfolds. Obsession, bone-chilling fear and black comedy translate into disturbingly compelling physicality and the sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious voice of Goggles. Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg acts, dances and inhabits this character and brings him to life and death before your unsuspecting eyes!

Percussionist Sal Ferreras returns to the Shadbolt with a dozen of his rhythm-making drummer pals ready to raise the roof with their explosive, electric and ever-eclectic array of rhythms and grooves. Catch this powerful contingent of great Vancouver drummers as they join forces, and undoubtedly try to outdo each other in presenting the very best rhythm traditions of their native Brazil, Cuba, India, Africa and Puerto Rico. There’ll be sticks flying, feet stomping, heads shaking, hips swaying… and that’s just the audience. Check out the stage action for some of the most amazing drumming – and some of the most serious fun – you’ll see anywhere.
