It’s All Fun and Games at the Burnaby Village Museum

From local and Canadian history to celebrations, festivals, events and games – Burnaby Village Museum (BVM) is one of the city’s most popular and unique attractions.

With the BVM’s summer season officially opening on May 2nd, the museum is hosting a number of special family-friendly events over the next few months.

On May 2nd, the village museum is proud to host the Rivers to Sea Regional Historica Fair.  The Historica Fair is similar to a science fair, except students focus on Canadian history and heritage.  Since its creation in 1993, the Historica Fairs Program has grown to include more than 200,000 students from across Canada each year.  This year’s fair will feature projects from Burnaby, New Westminster and Tri-Cities students (between grades four to 10) throughout the village.

Enjoy some good old-fashioned pomp, ceremony and fun this Victoria Day at the Burnaby Village Museum.  Set in the 1920s, the village museum is a throwback to the times of yore when pictures of King George V and Queen Mary could be found in the schoolhouse, where the Union Jack flag proudly flies in the air – and where Victoria Day is celebrated in grand style.

Some of this year’s traditional Victoria Day entertainment highlights include:

• A parade throughout the village.
• Historical re-enactors, including the Seymour Artillery Company featuring cannon firings and a special salute to the Queen.
• Character actors playing the part of Queen Victoria and her ladies-in-waiting performing a Queen’s Levée.
• Tiddly Cove Morris Dancers.
• Maypole Dancing.
• A colossal birthday cake decorated with blueberries and strawberries in the shape of the Union Jack (everyone’s invited to a free piece!).
• Children's crafts.

Through the summer season – from May 2nd to September 7th – the Burnaby Village Museum will also feature organized themed weeks focusing on sports, games and leisure activities.  Guests are invited to test their knowledge or skills, take part in some games, or just enjoy the fun and engaging demonstrations.
