Passport to Europe – The 17th Annual EuroFest
Over 10,000 visitors checked out last year’s European Festival at Swangard Stadium, which marked the first year that the festival turned into a weekend event. This year’s EuroFest is set to be even bigger and better, and there is a lot to look forward to on May 31st and June 1st. The EuroFest BC Society, along with their dedicated volunteers and sponsors, has put together a solid line-up to celebrate the best of Europe culture and heritage for everyone to enjoy in a family-friendly environment. If you’ve been eyeing those pictures on social media of the European adventures that your friends are enjoying, why not make a shorter and more inexpensive trip to Swangard for a taste of Europe in our own backyard?
On the topic of taste, the variety of food at EuroFest is always an excellent option for lunch, dinner, or simply a snack during your visit. Last year was my first experience at the festival and I enjoyed the loukoumades among other delicacies and I am definitely looking forward to trying something new this year. The Market Place will feature local businesses with European heritage, which will include food, crafts, jewelry, and clothing.
Hey Ocean! will be headlining a concert at EuroFest on Saturday evening (May 31st). The Vancouver band is no stranger to the local music scene, fronted by lead singer Ashleigh Ball and supported by guitarist David Beckingham and bassist David Vertesi. The trio has three EP’s and three full-length albums under their belts with the most recent release being IS (2012). If you haven’t had a chance to take a listen to Hey Ocean!, a good place to start is with the track “Big Blue Wave”, which is representative of the band’s base of indie-pop with a West Coast-inspired vibe and rhythm. The band is set to have a busy summer ahead of them with a series of festival appearances and shows on the East Coast, but you can catch them at Swangard before they head on tour!
Whether it is your first, second, or 17th visit to EuroFest, there is certainly something for everyone. It is also a great way to learn about the European culture and the historical connections that Europe has to Canada.
