Nine new members will be honored at the 16th annual Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Induction dinner Thursday, February 23, at the Metrotown Firefighters Social Club.

For one of the inductees it has been an award-winning few months.

Taekwondo’s Master Song Chul Kim will enter the Hall in the Builder category. It will complete a Triactor for the popular Burnaby coach-referee, recognized world-wide as one of his sport’s most accomplished officials.

In January, the World Taekwondo Federation honored Master Kim by naming him their Referee of the Year, this coming on the heels of Master Kim’s huge involvement with Tourism Burnaby in co-ordinating  and bringing the World Junior Taekwondo Championships in November to Bill Copeland Arena, considered the finest Junior taekwondo world event ever held. In terms of participation (102 countries) it is the second largest sports event ever held in Canada.

Joining Master Kim in the Builder category at the Sports Hall of Fame Induction are the late Duff Slavin (softball) and George Wong (hockey). Athletes being inducted are Bruce Gant (soccer), Patti McGuire (softball), Joseph Scigliano (soccer) and Dan Stroup (lacrosse). The Coach inductees are Derek Evely (athletics) and the late John Buchanan (soccer, golf).

Tickets for for the event are $75 or a table of ten $750. Tickets are available at or by calling Rosemary at 604-436-1672.
