Burnaby a strong part of the 2017 Vancouver Rugby Festival

Rugby fans in Burnaby will get the chance to see some top-level young players this month during the 2nd annual Vancouver Rugby Festival.

Held in conjunction with the HSBC Canada Sevens Tournament (to be played March 11 and 12 at BC Place), the festival, hosted by Rugby Canada and BC Rugby Union, features local and visiting teams in various divisions playing games in venues across the region.

Burnaby is front and centre with a jam-packed schedule of games at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club on March 9 and 10 with a pair of tournaments. BC Rugby Union is hosting its age-grade U18/U16 tournament and Rugby Canada is staging the Canadian U18 Sevens Championship. In all, more than 100 games will be played over the two days in Burnaby.

“With teams travelling from as far afield as New Zealand and Bermuda, as well as having the best local talent on show, this is sure to be both a competitive and fun two days,” said Oisin Daly, BC Rugby competitions and events coordinator.

“The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is the perfect location to showcase our age-grade portion of the Festival, because not only is it an exquisite venue but it provides us with a blank canvas to build the event into something spectacular in the future,” added Daly. “At our Festival, athletes and fans can expect a fun and high-energy environment that will draw in rugby fans from all over the province.”

“Players of all abilities, ages, genders and ethnicities from around the world have enjoyed the spirited play, culture and camaraderie of our club,” said Simon Smoldon, president of the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club. “We are thrilled to be part of the Vancouver Rugby Festival to showcase our facilities and vibrant social atmosphere. We offer a first-rate experience for all competitors and spectators. Rugby is a world game and we look forward to welcoming the world.”

“We’re pleased to again play a key role in the Festival. Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is a fantastic venue so it’s a natural fit,” said Jennifer Scott, Senior Manager of Sport Burnaby. “We have enthusiastic and knowledgeable rugby fans here in Burnaby, ready to cheer on this next generation of rugby stars.”

The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is located at 3760 Sperling Ave. behind the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.
